C Jumper Setting ============== x = Jumpers set at factory On both PCB's Jumpers JP41, JP43, JP21 and on PCB with a SHROUDED CONNECTOR, JP91 through JP94 are for Manufature Test purposes, they are NOT USER SELECTABLE and are shipped CLOSED. JP42 Write Protect ------------------- CLOSED Data cannot be written to the drive, only read opera- tions can be executed. x OPEN Allowing normal reading and writing. Located very close to the J2 power connector and the corner of the PCB, the write protect jumper is used to protect the data written to the XT-3000. JP44 Spin On Power-Up ---------------------- CLOSED The motor will start as soon as power is applied. DRive will spin down when power is removed from drive. On 3170/3280 OCB with a NON-SHROUDED connector, this jumper must be installed all times. On 3170/3280 PCB with a SHROUDED connector, this jumper, when installed, overrides the position of JP87. On this PCB part number it is recommended that JP44 is installed, that JP87 also be installed. JP81/JP82 Terminator Power --------------------------- JP81 OPEN JP82 CLOSED The terminator power is external from the SCSI bus. JP81 CLOSED JP82 OPEN x The terminator power is internal from the drive. JP83/84/85 SCSI ID ------------------- +----------+-----------------------+ | SCSI ID | Jumpers | | | JP85 | JP84 | JP83 | +----------+-------+-------+-------+ Lowest-----|x --0 | OPEN | OPEN | OPEN | | 1 | OPEN | OPEN | CLOSED| | 2 | OPEN | CLOSED| OPEN | | 3 | OPEN | CLOSED| CLOSED| | 4 | CLOSED| OPEN | OPEN | | 5 | CLOSED| OPEN | CLOSED| | 6 | CLOSED| CLOSED| OPEN | Highest----|----7 | CLOSED| CLOSED| CLOSED| Priority +----------+-------+-------+-------+ As shipped from the factory, all jumpers are open, giving the XT-3000 a priority value/ID of zero. In multiple SCSI device configuration, it is necessary to configure each device with a priority. The priority identification for each drive is determined by the three binarily weighted ID jumpers. An ID of 7 is the highest priority in a multidevice configuration. JP86 SCSI bus parity --------------------- x JP86 CLOSED Enables odd parity detection. OPEN Disables odd parity detection. As shipped from the factory the XT-3000 detects parity. Odd parity is always generated. JP87 DRIVE TYPE/SPIN DELAY/START COMMAND ----------------------------------------- On PCB with a NON-SHROUDED connector, JP87 is the DRIVE TYPE jumper. On PCB with a SHROUDED connector, JP87 is the SPIN DELAY/START COMMAND jumper. The SPIN DELAY/START COMMAND functions do not exist on PCB with a NON-SHROUDED connector. There is no DRIVE TYPE jumper on PCB with a SHROUDED connector. JP87 PCB with a NON-SHROUDED Connector Drive Type ---------------------------------------------------- JP87 CLOSED The drive reports its type as an XT-3170 (170MB) in the INQUIRY command. OPEN The drive reports its type as an XT-3280 (280MB). JP87 PCB with a SHROUDED Connector Spin Delay/Start Command ------------------------------------------------------------- JP87 CLOSED The ID value will be used to facilitate a sequential drive power-up process. The spindle motor turn-on, after power-up, is delayed by approximately 13 seconds for each prioity ID level. OPEN The drive will not spin-up until the Host issues a Start/Stop Command (1Bh) with the Start Bit = 1. In order for the JP87 options to operate on this PCB, JP44 MUST be removed. ********************************************************************** I N S T A L L ********************************************************************** MAXTOR XT-3000 OEM MANUAL 1011005 REV. C Interface Termination --------------------- As shipped, all assigned interface signal lines are terminated with a removable 220/330 ohm resistor network. The first device and the last device on the daisy-chain SCSI bus must be terminated. Remove the terminators from any devices in between. For instance, if the XT-3000 is in the middle of the string, remove its terminators. Any host adapters beeing used should be terminated in a similar fashion. The devices driving the drive inpute should be open collector devices capable of sinking at least 48 milliamps at a voltage level of less than 0.5 VDC (7438 or equivalent). Devices receiving the drive outputs should be of "SCHMITT" trigger type to improve noise immunity, 74LS14, 74LS240 or equivalent. The host adapter should not load the bus with more than one standard LSTTL input load per line, and should terminate the drive output signals with 220/330 ohm terminators. ********************************************************************** F E A T U R E S ********************************************************************** MAXTOR XT-3000 OEM MANUAL 10111005 REV. Install a 50 pin ribbon connector making sure pin 1, which can be identified by the striped edge of the cable, is closest to the power connector on the drive. 2. Install a DC power cable to the back of the drive. 3. Verify the SCSI ID selection. Note: SCSI ID usually needs to be set to 0 to be the boot drive. The last physical device on the SCSI bus must be terminated. Any other drive or SCSI device connected between the host and the device at the end of the bus must not be terminated. 4. Apply power to the computer. 4a. When memory test is complete go into your system's Standard C-MOS set-up. (Note: There are various ways to get into C-MOS set-up, please refer to system's manual for instuctions.) 4b. Set the drive type to "Not Installed". This intelligent drive will identify itself to the SCSI host adapter. 5. Boot from a DOS diskette that has FDISK.EXE and FORMAT.COM on it. At the A> prompt type in FDISK. At the menu options select option 1 to create a DOS partition. Another menu will appear and from those options choose 1 to create a Primary DOS partition. Select yes to make 1 large partition and it will automatically become active. Then escape from FDISK. 6. At the A> prompt type in FORMAT C:/S This does a high-level format on the drive and transfers the system files in order for the drive to be bootable. (Note: Maxtor SCSI drives are low-level formatted at the factory) 7. The drive is now bootable. As a test remove the DOS diskette from A and press reset to re-boot the computer, a C> should be displayed, the drive is now ready for operation.
