The disk drive can be mounted in any of the major axes. Physical Mounting ----------------- Typically, the disk drive is fastened directly to a chassis with four 6-32 screws. There are twelve (12) threaded mounting holes (for 6-32 screws) on the disk drive: four on each side, and four on the bottom. Use the following guidelines to mount the disk drive: - Use 6-32 screws and torque them to 10 inch-pounds. - When mounted, the hardware must not protrude more than 3 mm (0.12 inch) beyond the inside of the disk drive frame. ATA Interface Bus Connector --------------------------- An unshielded 40-pin bus connector is located on the rear of drive electronics/controller PCA. The physical construction and pin assignment for this connector conform to the ATA specification. DC Power Connector ------------------ The power connector on the rear of drive electronics/controller PCA provides connection for dc power used by the drive. Mating Connector and Cabling Requirements ----------------------------------------- The nonshielded ATA cable connector should be a 40-conductor connector consisting of two rows of 20 female contacts with adjacent contacts 2.54 mm (0.1 inch) apart. Keyed connectors should be used. The disk drive adheres to the cabling requirements and limitations set forth in the ATA specifications. Front Panel Activity Indicator ------------------------------ The optional light emitting diode (LED) on the front of the disk drive is an activity light that indicates the status of the DASP(L) (Drive Active/Drive 1 Present) line on the ATA bus. Buffer Management ----------------- This product incorporates a 64-kilobyte buffer for the Look-Ahead Read Cache function. Upon receiving a READ command, the controller will load the data plus as much additional data as possible into the buffer. The data from any of these sectors can be read independently by future READ commands without accessing the media. ********************************************************************** F E A T U R E S ********************************************************************** HEWLETT HP C2230 OPTION 060 PRODUCT DESCRIPTION MANUAL P/N 5960-0875 Product Description ------------------- The HP C2230 Series, Option 060, Disk Drives are reliable, high capacity, high performance, random access mass storage devices utilizing sputtered thin-film 3.5-inch disks as storage media. These drives incorporate a hybrid servo design that provides the flexibility and performance of a dedicated servo system and the dynamic head alignment of an embedded servo system. The electrical interface compatible with the proposed Common Access Method (CAM) AT Bus Attachment (ATA), also known as the IDE (Intelligent Drive Electronics) Interface. Key features of the HP 2230 Series, Option 060 Disk Drives include: - High reliability (150,000 hours MTBF) - Multiple zone recording - Look-Ahead Read Caching - Orderable Options: Front bezel Front panel LED (color can be specified) For customer needs that differ from the products described in this manual, Hewlett-Packard can provide specially modified products. These modifications are ordered, defined, engineered, and manufactured under "special" contract negotiations. Seek Time --------- +----------------------------------+--------+ | | C2230 | +----------------------------------+--------+ |Track-to-Track msec. typ. | 3 | +----------------------------------+--------+ |Average msec. typ. | 12.6 | | msec. max. | 25 | +----------------------------------+--------+ |Latency msec. avg. | 8.33 | +----------------------------------+--------+ Error Correction Code --------------------- The HP C2230 Option 060 disk drives use a computer generated error correction code (ECC) for detection and correction of data errors. During a Write operation, the ECC function generates 7 bytes of ECC information, and writes it into the ECC field as the sector is written. During a Read operation, the ECC function uses this information to detect any errors and to correct the data. The ECC function can correct a maximum of 11 bits in a single burst error. Drive Type Configuration Details -------------------------------- The capacities provide the maximum number of logical sectors available from the C2230 Series, Option 060 disk drives. The actual number of usable sectors available to the host system is determined by the "Drive Type" parameters selected when the drive is installed and configured. The ROM BIOS in most of the DOS systems available today can address the following maximum Drive Type parameters: - Cylinders: 1024; logical addresses 0 (zero) to 1023 - Heads: 16; logical addresses 0 (zero) to 15 - Sectors/Track: 63; logical addresses 1 (one) to 63 The C2230 Series, Option 060 disk drives contain more than the maximum number of DOS-addressable cylinders and sectors per track, and less than the maximum number of DOS-addessable data heads. In order to compensate for these differences and provide the maximum available disk storage area to the host, the drive firmware performs a "logical translation" or "mapping" from the Drive Type parameters selected during the head drive setup to the addressing structure of the disk drive. Execute Drive Diagnostic ------------------------ Perform the internal diagnostic tests implemented by the drive. The DRV bit is ignored. Both drives, if present execute this command. If Drive 1 is present: - Both drives execute diagnostics - Drive 0 waits up to 15 seconds for Drive 1 to assert PDIAG(-) - If Drive 1 has not asserted PDIAG(-), indicating a failure, Drive 0 shall sppend 80h to its own diagnostic status - Drive 0 clears BSY, and generates an interrupt - If Drive 1 diagnostic failure is detected when Drive 0 status is read, Drive 1 status is obtained by setting the DRV bit, and reading status. If Drive 1 is not present: - Drive 0 executes its diagnostics - Drive 0 posts only its own diagnostic results - Drive 0 clears BSY, and generates an interrupt The Diagnostic Code reported in the Error Register is a unique 8 bit code: Diagnostic Codes Diagnostic Code Code (hex) Description 01 No error detected 02 Formatter device error 03 Sector buffer error 04 ECC circuitry error 05 Controller microprocessor error 8x Drive 1 failed RAM Buffer ---------- The RAM Buffer contains 64-kilobytes of static RAM. All data transferred between the host and the disk must pass through the RAM buffer.
